On gray-box modeling for virtual flow metering

A virtual flow meter (VFM) enables continuous prediction of rates in petroleum production systems. The predicted may aid the daily control and optimization a asset. Gray-box modeling is an approach that combines mechanistic data-driven modeling. objective to create computationally feasible VFM for use real-time applications, with high accuracy scientifically consistent behavior. This article investigates five different gray-box model types industrial case study using real, historical data from 10 wells, spanning at most four years production. results are diverse oil rate error range 1.8%-40.6%. Further, casts light upon nontrivial task balancing learning both physics data. Consequently, providing general recommendations towards suitability hybrid models challenging. Nevertheless, promising indicate VFMs reduce while remaining consistent. findings motivate further experimentation suggest several future research directions improve performance scientific consistency.
